Coffeyville, Kansas Flood 2007

On 7/7/07 our Executive Director Wendy Haugen was deployed to Coffeyville Kansas to assist the Humane Society of the United States with the emergency sheltering of pets during a flood.  In addition to being immersed in 15 feet of water, many animals were contaminated due to a levee breach in a local oil refinery.  Wendy spent two weeks working as the Deputy Shelter Manager and Veterinary Assistant at the HSUS temporary shelter in a school gymnasium.  Despite the 12-14 hour workdays and extreme heat and humidity it was a great experience.  Most rewarding was being able to see the animals improve with the great care we provided and to experience animals reuniting with their families after weeks of separation.
